Gail Thomas

Poet & Educator
Gail Thomas has published four books of poetry, Odd Mercy (Headmistress Press),Waving Back (Turning Point), No Simple Wilderness: An Elegy for Swift River Valley (Haley’s), and Finding the Bear (Perugia). Her poems have appeared in many literary journals and anthologies including Beloit Poetry Journal, Calyx, North American Review, MomEgg  Review, and Naugatuck River Review. Her poems have been nominated for the Pushcart Prize, and among her awards are the Charlotte Mew Prize for Odd Mercy, the Pat Schneider Poetry Prize, the Massachusetts Center for the Book for Waving Back, and the Naugatuck River Review's Narrative Poetry Prize. She is the recipient of writing and teaching grants from the Massachusetts Cultural Council and the Ludwig Vogelstein Foundation, and was awarded residencies at the MacDowell Colony and Ucross. Her book, No Simple Wilderness, about the creation of the Quabbin Reservoir in the 1930’s has been taught in college courses. As one of the original teaching artists for the MCC’s Elder Arts Initiative, Thomas led intergenerational arts projects across the state. Originally from Pennsylvania, she raised her two daughters in Western Massachusetts where she has lived for 40 years. Thomas is retired from Smith College and teaches poetry through Pioneer Valley Writers' Workshops. She also volunteers at the Center for New Americans as an English and citizenship tutor and at Bright Spot Therapy Dogs as a Reading Buddy with her dog Sunny.
